چکیده
Address for Correspondence: Dr. Y. Mamatha, Associate professor, Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences, Madikeri, Karnataka State, India. E-Mail: [email protected] Background: The lungs are the essential organs of respiration. Fissures are an integral part of human lung. The fissures in lung enhance uniform expansion. These fissures may be complete, incomplete or absent. A detailed knowledge of variations of classical and accessory fissures is necessary for proper radiological interpretation. It is a guide to cardiothoracic surgeons performing segmental lung resections, lobectomies to have an uncomplicated perioperative outcome. Considering the clinical and anatomical importance of this topic, the present study is undertaken. Aim of the study: The cadaveric study was done to note the morphological variation of the fissures of lung and compared it with previous studies. Results: In the present study among 40 adult human cadaveric lungs, the following observation was made; right sided lungs had incomplete oblique fissure in3 lungs, incomplete horizontal fissure in 10 lungs. Left sided adult lungs had incomplete oblique fissure in 7, absent oblique fissure-1, accessory fissure-3 lungs. Conclusion: Knowledge of normal and abnormal morphological variation is very important for the clinicians, radiologist and surgeons in order to avoid misinterpretation and misdiagnosing and preventing the untoward incidents.

Variations in Lung Fissures and Lobes: a Case Report
The Knowledge of variations in the lung can help surgeons to control bleeding during pulmonary lobectomy or might be used to reduce post-operative complications. Due to the importance of the knowledge of variations in lungs for clinicians, especially surgeons and radiologists, we report a case with lung lobe and fissure. During the autopsy of a 27-year-old man at the Legal Medicine Organizatio...

This study was aimed at determining major accessory fissures (MAF) and absence or incompleteness of lobar or major fissures (MF) during routine forensic autopsies. Prior to starting this prospective study, forms were prepared to collect data on pulmonary lobes and fissures. In this study, 420 lungs of 210 autopsy cases were examined for incompleteness and absence of MF and complete accessory fi...
متن کاملA Study of Variations of Lobes and Fissures in Human Fetal Lungs
Introduction:The human lungs are divided by fissures into lobes, which facilitate movements of lobes in relation to one another. Anatomical variations of lungs including number, fissures and lobes are at utmost important. Aim: The study was done to note the morphological variation of the fissures and lobes in fetal lungs. Materials and Methods:62 human fetusesfrom 12 weeks to 40 weeks of gestat...
متن کاملMorphological variations of the lungs: a study conducted on Indian cadavers
Awareness of anatomical variations in lungs is essential during segmental or lobar resections of lungs. We studied the variations of fissures, lobes and hilar structures in 65 right and 73 left isolated lungs from the dissection hall. Horizontal fissure was absent in 3.07% and incomplete in 35.38% of right lungs. Four point six one percentage of right lungs had 3 fissures and 4 lobes. Three poi...
متن کاملPulmonary fissures and lobar variations in relation to surgical &Radiological implications
Lungs are separated into lobes by fissures, with three lobes on the right and two on the left. The fissures facilitate the uniform expansion of the whole lung. The anatomical knowledge of the fissures and the lobes of the lung is important for accurate interpretation of bronchopulmonary segments on X-rays and CT scans. 40 pairs of lungs removed from cadavers were utilized for the study of the p...
